"Project Management in an increasingly volatile world"
Save the Date, February 13th!

In a volatile world, projects must adapt by increasing flexibility, fostering relationships and embracing agile methods.

Dear member,

Kindly book the NAP contact meeting on February 13th, themed “Project management in an increasingly volatile world”.

NAP has found two highly appreciated speakers from the TU Delft and from the Special Interest Group Project Management, to guide you through theories and experiences on the challenges and adaptations, which are currently expected in our world of project management.

To pre-inform you and give you something to think about during Christmas, we have chosen to already send you a short insight on the subject and to announce one of our speakers, Prof. Dr. Wijnand Veeneman. More information will be provided at the start of January.

Navigating project complexity in volatile times
In a world that is increasingly volatile for various reasons, projects are becoming more and more deprived of a stable and predictable environment. We say: complexity is increasing. Part of the function of projects is to limit that external complexity by shielding it from dynamics and volatility: developing a good asset is already complicated enough without the client who is constantly having new demands, the scope constantly changing, the prioritized value drivers constantly shifting, etc. Therefore, we shield of our projects: the internal complexity is great, which makes excluding external complexity logical and desirable.

But now, as the assumptions about the supposedly stable external world becomes increasingly vulnerable due to volatility, projects also become more vulnerable. What answers can be given on how to deal with this? From more flexibility in the project to warmer relationships with the environment, from more decentralized and broader responsibility in projects to more agile forms of early scope development. A volatile world does not become more stable or predictable, but the chance that an asset that we can use will come out of the project may increase. On February 13th, Wijnand Veeneman will share a first look at the possibilities.

Wijnand Veeneman is a professor of governance of infrastructure and mobility at Delft University of Technology. Together with his team, he has been studying for thirty years how we make decisions about infrastructure and mobility and how the solutions are shaped precisely by the way decisions are made. A large part of his work is about how this manifests in projects. He is the scientific director of NGinfra, a role in which he has shaped and directed their research programme with 7 Dutch universities since 2014 for 6 Dutch infrastructure managers (Rijkswaterstaat, ProRail, Vitens, Alliander, Port of Rotterdam, and Schiphol), including cross-sectoral projects. Since 2006, he has been teaching project management at Shell, focusing on dealing with more complex stakeholder environments.
