Grootste drijvende productie-installatie ooit gemaakt werpt schaduw vooruit
NAP-contactbijeenkomsten brengen vaak onderwerpen die de verbeelding ver te boven gaan. Gelukkig verlicht het goede diner het verwerken van de 'onthutsende'-informatie.
Deze keer betrof het de eerste drijvende fabriek ter wereld voor de productie van vloeibaar gas. Rob Nibbelke, Interim Vice President Development LNG & Integrated Gas van Shell, nam op 26 mei zijn gehoor mee in de ontwikkeling en de uitdagingen van een unieke productie-installatie.
Met een sterk groeiende wereldbevolking - van meer dan 7 miljard nu naar zeker 10 miljard in 2050 - zal het aanspreken van fossiele energiebronnen een must blijven. Daaronder valt aardgas, de schoonste fossiele brandstof met voor honderden jaren voorraad. Shell, inmiddels wereldleider in vloeibaar gas, richt zich daarbij ook op voorheen niet economisch of moeilijk te ontginnen gasvelden offshore.
"Drijvende vloeibaar aardgasproductie", zegt Nibbelke, "kan als voorspel worden gezien op het gebied van nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de offshore gasmarkt. Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) is een revolutionaire technologie, die het mogelijk maakt nieuwe energiebronnen offshore te ontsluiten. Daarom hebben we onze eerste drijvende installatie genoemd naar het gasveld Prelude voor de Australische kust, waar deze zal worden ingezet."
Aan de hand van videobeelden - die ook op de Shell-projectwebsite te zien zijn - wordt het revolutionaire karakter alsmede de ongelofelijke schaal snel duidelijk. "Op alle terreinen waren de uitdagingen enorm", vervolgt Nibbelke. "Proces, logistiek, veiligheid, samenwerking, personeel, klimaat, het is bijna onmogelijk aan te geven op hoeveel vragen allemaal een antwoord gevonden moest worden."
Innovatief door integraliteit
De Prelude heeft een lengte van meer dan vier voetbalvelden en met zes keer meer waterverplaatsing dan een vliegdekschip is het de grootste drijvende offshore-installatie ooit gebouwd. In mei 2013 werd de kiel gelegd. "De romp dient voor opslag, bovendeks staan alle productie-installaties en de accommodatie voor maximaal 300 mensen. De FNLG is een integrale samenvoeging van bewezen technologieën. De combinatie maakt het innovatief. Er zijn meer dan 1,6 miljoen uren in de engineering en designfase van het project gestoken. Niet alleen is de omvang van de installatie zeer compact - slechts een kwart van die van een landfabriek -, ze staat op een niet-stabiele ondergrond en zal bestand moeten zijn tegen de krachtigste tropische cyclonen. Veel van de technieken die succesvol aan land gebruikt worden, zijn aangepast of gewijzigd om de processen, zoals vloeibaarmaking en verlading op zee, mogelijk te maken. Ze zijn uitvoerig gemodelleerd en getest om te zorgen dat ze veilig en efficiënt onder maritieme omstandigheden zullen werken."
Wereldbrede bouwplaats
Prelude is een wereldwijd project, met de fabricage van componenten over de gehele wereld. Een belangrijke bouwplaats is de werf van Samsung Heavy Industries in Zuid-Korea, waar de romp en de opbouwen in aanbouw zijn. "Daar werken dagelijks maar liefst 5.000 mensen. In Dubai wordt het turret mooring systeem vervaardigd. Eenmaal geassembleerd zal het met 100 meter de hoogste laadtoren ter wereld zijn. Uit Maleisië komen de onderzeese systemen als kerstbomen, spruitstukken en regelapparatuur. De Prelude-laadarmen zijn in aanbouw op een fabriek in Frankrijk. Niet alleen logistiek een enorme puzzel, ook het managen van de culturele verschillen vraagt uiterste aandacht."
Eenmaal klaar zal de Prelude worden gesleept naar een locatie op circa 475 kilometer (ongeveer 300 mijl) ten noordoosten van Broome, West-Australië. Daar wordt ze afgemeerd en verbonden met de onderzeese infrastructuur. De productiecapaciteit zal ten minste 5,3 miljoen ton vloeistof per jaar bedragen: 3,6 miljoen ton LNG, 1,3 miljoen ton condensaat en 0,4 miljoen ton vloeibaar petroleumgas. LNG- en LPG-carriers zullen bij de Prelude aanmeren om de producten te verschepen naar o.m. Europa en Azië.
"Gaande het bouwproces", besluit Nibbelke, "kijken onze engineers natuurlijk al verder. Gas minder rijk aan LPG en meer product uit dezelfde fabriek on-land en off-shore zijn daarbij belangrijke uitgangspunten. Zo kan Shell nog beter helpen te voldoen aan de groeiende wereldwijde vraag naar energie en tegelijk CO2-uitstoot beperken door het inzetten van aardgas, momenteel goed voor meer dan de helft van onze productie."
